General: This is about normal moisture for this time of year. The mud season is drawing to a close. Agriculture: Our normal moisture bodes well for crops. Spring is earlier by a couple of weeks, based on birds returning. Soil moisture is 50% at 3". Fire: Low risk right now because it is still pretty cool (35 degrees F right now) Plants/wildlife: We have frogs! That is such a treat, because it's been quite a while since we've heard them. We also saw a terrestrial garter snake (adult size). Magpies are nesting about 2 weeks early relative to prior years. Water: Our snowpack is pretty much average this year, so we should be in pretty good shape downstream. The Portneuf River is still flooding.  View

Oh boy. Well o mother nature brought it on this week and more coming. So this past week now we are just under 4 inches of rain in three separate rains. Some of it came a bit too much all at once instead of over a long period of time. Top soils are now saturated and plenty of run off. Some day we will probe around to see how easily a 4 ft surveyors rod can be pushed into the ground. Meanwhile though. we are plenty wet and could let it soak in deep.  View

April started rather wet, but the past two weeks have brought just 0.43”. Not counting this morning’s catch, we’re at 3.93” total against a PRISM average of 4.39”, and there’s not a lot of month left to reach average. However, soils remain nicely moist and the spring greenup continues. Wildlife activity is normal; the only thing out of normal is pond level, down about two inches. That’s because the cranberry trust ran pumps in the bogs for several nights to protect the vines against frost. The pond is partially spring-fed, so it should recharge by midweek even if we don’t get much rain.  View

Leaf litter on the forest floor had been getting dry but rain overnight has restored moisture. Most trees are still bare with only willows and young maples sprouting tiny leaves. The spring ephemerals, now including dutchman's britches, are prolific in the woods. Daffodils and forsythia brighten yards. My plum tree is starting to blossom. Grass is green and growing and I used the lawn mower on high spots yesterday. After a cool week, weather is warming. I planted onion sets and chard in the garden yesterday. Raspberry canes are sprouting new leaves and rhubarb is almost ready to pick. Lots of people out using local bike trails.  View

Cold start to the week, with a couple freeze warnings. The ground remained damp during mostly cloudy skies. Temps remained on the cooler side dipping to 36°, though one day we topped at 73°. My indoor Temp dropped to a chilly 57°. Grass in thickening and is a deep green. Shrubs are greening nicely. The blossoming trees are getting ready to pop. Forecast: Rain starting today and continuing for most of the week with Cloudy skies, Temps in the 40s-60s. Total Precipitation estimated between 1 and 2", possibly pushing us to the Moderately Wet conditions. Annual flowers, have bloomed but were undersized and are now starting to whither. I found it funny to see the Cicada maps, which have a similar look to the CoCoRaHS precipitation map.  View

Weekly precipitation was 0.37 inches. Last Sunday and Monday were nice and cooler than the rest of the week. A warmup began Tuesday with a South wind and back in the 80s by Wednesday. Thursday was only 73 for a high with mostly cloudy skies and a light rain shower (0.07) around mid-day. Friday was very windy from the SSE (up to 36 peak gust) with a high of 85. A thundershower in the 1 to 3 AM range Saturday morning dropped 3 tenths. Saturday was again very windy from the SE (37 peak gust) with a high of 86 and complete drying out occurring. We have been getting plenty of planting done (cotton and beans now) and spraying and drain digging etc. this past week. Most trees are fully leafed-out now with some just getting started. Lots of crop emerging in the area. I did notice that neighbors who planted corn before the week with 5 inches of rain in 3 days did not get a stand and are having to replant. Beans made it through ok because they can be planted shallow. Over all conditions seem normal.  View

With just a half inch this week, and that was last Sunday, and only 1.11 this month, we are beginning to dry out. But with 16.28" this calendar year, a couple inches above "normal", we are fine long term. the top layer of newly cultivated soil is drying quickly, meaning newly planted seeds/sedlings have needed water. With no rain and high temps predicted for the next several days we could venture into "mildly dry." A side note, on April 26 we began witnessing the appearance of 13 year periodic cicadas. With new ones each day since.  View

Three weeks of low rainfall allowed top soils to become too dry. The 0.04" this week did not come till after noon Saturday. April total of 4.83 is above the whole-month normal of 4.15. Yearly and last-366-day running totals of 19.93 and 64.46" respectively are still well above 1991-2020 30-year averages. Therefore, deep moisture continues adequate. Lawn grasses have been doing well despite recent dryness. Deciduous leaf emergence is well enough advanced so that green has been the dominant color of hillsides this week.  View
