The week started off warm with high temperatures in the 70's before cooling off later in the week and becoming windy with a storm moving through on Friday night to Saturday morning. High temperatures dropped to the 60's later in the week and then to 51° on Saturday. The high of the week and year, so far, was 76° on Sunday and Monday. The low of the week was 33° on Saturday. Clouds increased on Friday with rain and a thunderstorm in the early evening with even some brief hail. It turned to snow during the overnight hours. A total of .46 inches of rain/melted snow and 1.2 inches of snow fell. All the snow melted Saturday. It was windy later in the week but especially on Friday. A lot of blooms on the crabapples, redbud, and pear seem to have been damaged from an earlier freeze and may not bloom. Harvesting a lot of asparagus and the peas are coming up. Saw swallows in the neighborhood but haven't seen any coming into the yard. Did see a chipmuck in the backyard and the frog comes and suns himself in a pot at the top of the pond daily, half submerged. A lot of robins, blackbirds, and finches in the yard.  View

A typical April week with 1.01” of rain, ETo 0.25”, and mostly cool and cloudy. Ruth Lake Reservoir 101% on 4/25. Mad River 7.51 ft and 1019.21 cfs/Eel River 12.77 ft and 5674.31 cfs at Scotia. Weeds, grasses and wildflowers all blooming and seeding, and fir trees look to have an abundant crop of cones after almost none last year. California Fish and Wildlife issued a warning reminder on Salmon Poisoning Disease, which can be dangerous or deadly to dogs, when they ingest raw or undercooked salmon (I know having almost lost a dog to it many years ago—a neighbor threw away salmon entrails along our fence line within easy access to my dog). On an interesting side note involving dogs and salmon, in the early 1850s when Indian Agent Redick McKee was negotiating the first treaty with the Hoopa Tribe, members of his party were astounded to find the tribe had dogs that loved to eat salmon and were not affected by it’s danger. Due to student occupation of the administration building at Cal Poly Humboldt, the university has been put on a hard lockdown and closed for the rest of the semester. Student learning and finals will be remote. Dorm students are confined to their rooms but allowed to go to and from the dining halls. Anyone found on campus can be cited for trespassing. All other activities have been cancelled. Whether graduation will happen has not been announced. There is a very large police presence with dozens of out-of-area officers in town. Identified students who participated in the occupation are being suspended pending hearings on their future status.  View

Just a very small amount of rain since the last report--we are definitely entering the dry season and watering time. Well levels are fine, so there should be no water shortages this year, except for those with old very shallow wells. The strong north winds have returned and will be with us for a number of days. This tends to make the ocean too rough for water sports or fishing. Spring bloomers are starting to reach peak and lots of buds showing on summer bloomers. Starting to hear the calls of summer migrant birds. It's been a lovely Spring so far--we are fortunate here on the coast.  View

I finally feel good about setting the scale to Near Normal after the almost 2" of SWE we received over the past 3 days. It is melting off fast which means the rivers will be way up and probably not great for fishing, but we are in spring thaw season so no great expectations for fishing quality. Very much needed for flora and fauna as we have been below normals for most of the current Water Year. Snotel sites are registering approximately 100% of normal SWE in my nearby basins (all in Green in the NWCC iMap) in Northern Colorado, less to the south of me. The dump of snow in the high country is great for snowshoe and backcountry skiing but the avalanche danger is increased and is currently set at moderate for all reported elevations (CAIC).  View

General: This is about normal moisture for this time of year. The mud season is drawing to a close. Agriculture: Our normal moisture bodes well for crops. Spring is earlier by a couple of weeks, based on birds returning. Soil moisture is 50% at 3". Fire: Low risk right now because it is still pretty cool (35 degrees F right now) Plants/wildlife: We have frogs! That is such a treat, because it's been quite a while since we've heard them. We also saw a terrestrial garter snake (adult size). Magpies are nesting about 2 weeks early relative to prior years. Water: Our snowpack is pretty much average this year, so we should be in pretty good shape downstream. The Portneuf River is still flooding.  View

Oh boy. Well o mother nature brought it on this week and more coming. So this past week now we are just under 4 inches of rain in three separate rains. Some of it came a bit too much all at once instead of over a long period of time. Top soils are now saturated and plenty of run off. Some day we will probe around to see how easily a 4 ft surveyors rod can be pushed into the ground. Meanwhile though. we are plenty wet and could let it soak in deep.  View

Only 0.47 inches of rain this week and 0.03 inches last week makes it feel like Near Normal conditions. But Climatology report on Data Explorer suggests Above Normal so I marked Condition Bar as Mildly Wet: Month TD: 140% above normal Water YTD: 128% above normal YTD: 143% above normal that amounts to 3.97 inches above normal. Daffodils and tulips were starting to droop tho some of that could have been due to the high winds we experienced Friday-Saturday. This week I received 2.39" of rain spread over 3days allowing time to soak in some. My pond is overflowing around 2+" and our creek is also up handling the local runoff. This is very normal for April but I have still moved my condition to Mildly Wet. With a few days left in April My station is 1.2" over our monthly average and more is expected. My lawns are wet, and soft but not overly squishy. Some of the farm fields have limited standing water areas but are not flooded. No field work will be possible for several days. Working in my garden is also not possible. We have had another wood duck hatch this week.  View

Rain for the week at this location was 0.33 in. and a couple of traces. May have been a bit more as it was usually breezy along with the rain. Top soil was sticking to the temp probe when checking soil temps this a.m. so there is more moisture in the soil then previous. We dogged a couple of bullets again this week with weather around us. The 120 around us was no till planted this week as was the neighbor to the West. Saw a lot of planting going on in travels. Mowed for the first time this week. Still have a bit to do. Eight hours on the mower for an 81 yr. old is a long day. Trees are finally budding out. Still watching a couple. Grass is doing good at this point. Rhubarb and Asparagus doing well. Flowers as well. One point four two this past week of rain with a little over an inch on Friday. That would be the most daily rainfall since late June 2023. So far this month, two point three. Temperatures averaged 2.7 degrees above normal. Still holding it at moderately dry until we get some decent rain totals over a couple of days. All the heavy rain is falling south and east of us. Interesting weather day Friday with the tornadoes zooming around on my wife's birthday. Cell phones going off at the restaurant in Des Moines for tornado warning gave people a start. Pays to have a weather app with velocity data. Otherwise, grass has greened up rapidly the past week with nearly all trees have or getting close to leafing out. Fields to my north were planted this past week with large fields to my south to be done yet. Bass are jumping around in the pond.  View
