Notes
this is the wettest 24 hr.that I have recorded. (Orig obs submitted at 7:45 AM Hawaii time Sunday morning, April 15) ADDITIONAL COMMENTS ADDED 4/18 BY NOLAN DOESKEN,COCORAHS HEADQUARTERS, AFTER PHONE CONVERSATION WITH OBSERVER -- THIS OBSERVATION APPEARS TO BE FULLY VALID AND POSSIBLY A BIT OF AN UNDER-REPORT. OBSERVER TOOK SEVERAL INCREMENTAL READINGS DURING THE STORM TO AVOID OVER-TOPPING THE GAUGE. ALSO, THIS TOTAL FELL IN SOMEWHAT LESS THAT 24 HOURS SINCE HE HAD EMPTIED THE GAUGE ON SATURDAY AT 7:30 AM RAIN FELL ALL DAY BUT HEAVIEST DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. FROM 7:30 AM TO 2:20 pm 5.00" FELL AND READING WAS NOT ROUNDED. FROM 2:20 - 5:30 PM 7.55" FELL. FROM 5:30 TO 7 PM THE MOST INTENSE RAIN FELL AND LOCAL DAMAGE BEGAN 7.33" FELL IN 90 MINUTES. OBSERVER THEN ATTENDED TO PERSONAL SAFETY, BUT DID ANOTHER READING AT 1:30 AM AND FOUND THE GAUGE FULL OR NEARLY FULL. DID NOT MEASURE PRECISELY AT THAT TIME, BUT CONSERVATIVELY ESTIMATED 10.00" THEY EVACUATED THEN FOR HIGHER GROUND BUT RETURNED TO CHECK GAUGE AT 6:45 m AND MEASURED ADDITIONAL 6.55" FOR TOTAL OF 36.43 -- NOT SURE WHY OBSERVERS TOTAL WAS 36.49" BUT WILL LEAVE IT ALONE AS HE MAY HAVE ATTEMPTED TO ACCOUNT FOR SOME OF THE SPILLING THAT OCCURRED DURING INCREMENTAL MEASUREMENTS. MANY LOCAL IMPACTS -- TWO NEARBY HOUSES WASHED AWAY, NEIGHBORS HOUSE NOW CONTAINS LARGE 18" DIAMETER LOG IN LIVING ROOM. ROAD WASHED OUT IN 3 PLACES SO NOT GOING ANYWHERE SOON. WATER CAME UP TO THE HOUSE BUT DIDN'T GO IN. BASED ON LOCATION OF THUNDER AND LIGHTNING, HEAVIEST STORM SEEMED A FEW MILES EAST, BUT MOST RAIN APPARENTLY FELL HERE. MOST RAIN DROPS WERE MODERATE IN SIZE BUT HUGE IN NUMBER. TEMPERATURES GENERALLY IN LOW TO MID 70S FOR THE DURATION OF THIS RAIN EVENT. THIS IS INCREDIBLE TO CATCH A RAIN LIKE THIS. SEE COCORAHS BLOGPOST FOR MORE DETAILS AFTER 4/19
