Condition Monitoring Report
Station Number: NC-CN-31
Station Name: New Bern 8.8 W
Report Date: 11/19/2017
Submitted: 11/19/2017 7:57 AM
Scale Bar: Near Normal
Description:
Although we have received less than an inch of rain over the past week, water remains standing in low spots in ditches. However, it has been necessary to water some plants such as newly planted shrubs and winter-vegetables such as lettuce.
The frost just 24 hours ago was the first for this year, though we did have a freezing temperature period a week ago. This frost has halted the growing of most plants such as basil and pepper plants.
AGRICULTURE: Soy and Cotton continue to be harvested.
ENERGY: usage levels remain low. Temperatures varying as much as 45 degrees from overnight to daytime has caused the use of both a/c and heating within 24 hour periods, but not much usage since interiors are slow to heat or cool.
FIRE: The levels likely remain moderate as the seasonal drying of vegetation continues, and winds have been and continue to be brisk.
PLANTS: As stated above, the normal 'growing season' has ended this week. Honey Bees are still actively seeking forage resources, and we see them on Eleagnus, Winter-Blooming Camellia, and even marigolds. Dandelions have not yet reappeared, society garlic is just starting. Hollies all have red berries now. The Bradford Pear trees in this IMMEDIATE VICINITY have not yet had their leaves turn to red; while other trees have lost all or most of their leaves.
WILDIFE: We live rural and have access to hunting land, where we have seen evidence of black bear foraging. Rabbits, squirrels, cardinals, wrens, and chickadees are active during the warmth of the mid-day
TOURISM & RECREATION: no weather event has impacted any outdoor activities that we are aware of
WATER SUPPLY & QUALITY: a recent switch to a different aquifer has caused a very slight difference in the taste of our drinking water (we are told it has more minerals in it now)
