While we recently recorded rainfall from recent showers of just over .5", we haven't observed much in the way of precip over the past 30-60 days. Conditions have been between mildly to moderately dry, with cooler conditions contributing to mildly dry vs moderately dry. Conditions seem to remain about the same with no trend in either direction. High temps in the high 70s to low 80s have been occurring, with frequent fronts. High winds from the SW alternating to the NW - back and forth. Sustained 20-25 mph winds with gusts 40+ have been common in southerly and northerly directions. Soil is clay here, and is hard and dry - indicating low moisture. Cool weather grasses, daffodils, iris, are doing fairly well due to cool conditions in-between, and recent .5" rain will help, however if additional rains don't come plant stress will occur. Creek on our land still has some small flow, indicating the sub-soil still has moisture. WILDLIFE REPORT: Turkeys have been breaking up their winter flock pattern and toms are strutting - warmer high temps have been triggering this recent activity. Deer dropped antlers much later than they usually do in early February. This year bucks were carrying their antlers well into mid March - not alot of data but this is the first we've seen this over the past 8 years. Water temps in reservoirs have been significantly cooler than normal. Currently at Melvern Res in Kansas, surface temps are between 47 and 49 degrees and coming up very slowly. Over the past 15 years temps are typically from low 50s to upper 50s. I fish for walleyes every year in this exact timeframe and the difference this year is noticeable and from other anglers. Walleyes are slow and behind their spring pattern that is triggered by higher temps. The pattern of up and down temperatures are most likely impacting wildlife behaviors on land and in water.
