Temperatures cooled to more seasonable levels last week and the rush to spring slowed. The first bloom of crocuses has disappeared and daffodils have yet to flower. Nearly an inch of rain has kept the soil wet and occasional snow showers coated the ground. Basset Brook has retreated to normal spring flow levels. Turkeys have begun gobbling in the woods and spring peepers and wood frogs have appeared in our pond. No spotted salamanders yet. More flocks of Canada Geese are flying north. Trails on Mt Greylock lower elevations are starting to dry out but are still wet. Rhubarb is beginning to sprout but raspberries, blueberries, grapes and fruit trees remain dormant.
