Brignac, Louisiana
Saturday brought delightful summer-like weather, while Sunday returned to the chilly wintertime. The front that is causing so much bad weather to our north had our area under a tornado watch with very little rain.
The only water in the drainage ditch was in a trail left in the soft mud by turtles passing through.
Strong southern winds blew small dead branches from trees and scattered leaves across the entire yard. Many trees have leafed out and fruit hang from the swamp red maples. Mulberry tree flowers and new growth were completely killed by the 26 degrees this week. Citrus trees cloaked in brown leaves don’t show any signs of growth. Irrigation was used to keep the large pots of blooming petunias growing. Gladiolus have sprouted in the soil despite the cold ground. Regulars at the feeding table were joined by red winged blackbirds. Not many robins in the yard this year. My insurance company required that I remove overhanging tree limbs to prevent possible damage from them falling onto my roof in the wind. A tree trimming bucket truck was driven close to the tree by placing mats on top of the lawn to prevent ruts. The soil held up well despite being a little soft under foot.
