Thursday (05/02/24) a significant amount of rain (0.71 inches) fell at this location. The soil is moist and there is some standing water in ditches, ponds, and low spots for the wildlife. Plants are not showing any signs of drought stress. Dry, windy conditions resulted in a few brush fires in the region this week. All of the fires were small and quickly extinguished. No homes had to be evacuated and there were no reported injuries to humans, pets, livestock or property.  View

NOT A GOOD WEATHER WEEK FOR OUR AREA! FIRE - Our status is EXTREME - no significant rain in our area for over two weeks. See Energy for additional information. ENERGY - For last week, our daytime and night time temperatures are above average. We seem to be about 4-5° above normal. During the day closed doors and windows and the AC is working daily. GENERAL - Looking at the WX forecast for the next 10 days - NO PREDICTED PRECEPITATION IS LISTED. The “Beaches of Summerfield Lake” don’t look like beaches any more, but like “Land”. An aside: Our community Irrigation System has been down since last Saturday, we have been unable to water our lawns. It looks like it is still disabled and will not be repaired until next week.  View

A total of 0.68” of precip was received over the last week, spread out fairly evenly over 3 separate days. While soaking rains once again skirted this area we fortunately managed to maintain our near normal soil condition. My spring is still flowing about the same as last week, so deep soil moisture must be adequate. Area waterways also remain about the same, near their normal levels, with the bigger and further west Rock River still on the high side. The trees and understory have really greened up over the last few days and are nearing their maximum extent. I’ve noticed more bird activity lately with one Bluebird house now occupied by a Purple Finch and one with an actual Bluebird. Geese have families now and for some reason too many like to cross roads. I guess they just have to get to the other side.  View

An additional 0.95" of rain fell this past week and April monthly total rainfall was 6.67" which is about three inches above normal. Grass needs mowed very frequently, especially with the warmer, humid weather we've had. Very little additional field work done as there are still spots in fields with some standing water. Planting progress is behind normal and with plenty of rain chances again next week, it's very unlikely much will get done in the fields unless we get lucky and miss a couple of rains.  View

The rainfall has been considerably above normal for both April and for May so far. The ground is becoming super saturated. The grass is very wet and soggy. Both me and my neighbor had several lawn mower jams yesterday when cutting our yards. The 1.15" of heavy rain so far this morning is making conditions even more soggy. The leaves on the trees are already full-size in late spring so far. The grass is growing so fast that it requires cutting every 4 days. Spring 2024 has been warm and very wet so far. The cicadas are starting to appear and are beginning to become numerous due to the higher than normal temperatures and heavy rains. The 4" soil temperature has already reached 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the past 3 days.  View

April 27-May 3, 2024 Brignac, Louisiana Drenching rain provided enough irrigation for the week. Landscape plants are growing well and my fertilized lawn is jumping. Spring weeds have set seeds and are starting to dehisce as summer weeds like chamber bitters and lespedeza weed are sprouting. Maypop vines have been flowering for a couple of weeks now but no sulfur butterflies are around yet this spring. Mulberry trees are still producing fruit which the starlings are taking advantage of. And a new crop of squirrels has emerged and making their way to the feeding table. Mayhaw fruit are continuing to fall yet there is one selection that is still pea sized and green! Pecan trees are loaded with female flowers that I hope are fertilized. Drainage ditches are low and not flowing  View

A mostly dry week has helped low lying spots dry out. A few warm days and nights brought out the frogs, calling in the daytime and peeping at night - a welcome summer sound! Most trees have leafed out this week (except the oaks) and apple and peach trees are blooming, along with lilacs, violets and azaleas. Even a few very early bearded iris. New avian visitors include catbirds, white throated sparrows and rose-breasted grossbeaks. Also heard the first wood thrushes in Robinson State Park. Our sandy soil is dry on top with plenty of moisture a half-inch down, good spring growing and transplanting conditions.  View

Spring rains are helping a great deal to overcome the moisture deficit over the past two years with good rains again this week. Some flooding in the area and many rivers and creeks are flooding roads. A small tornado formed in the area and caused damage to homes and trees. Shoal Creek is returning to normal levels. There have been several water rescue incidents in the area this week. Deer and other wildlife are very active. Grass and hay meadows are developing rapidly. Fire danger is low however gusty winds are still a danger factor.  View
