"Ice Ice Baby - Predicting Freezing Rain Icing and Impacts" Jay Shafer Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (formerly Lyndon State College) Atmospheric Sciences Lyndonville. VT
(Biography) This presentation will provide an overview of winter storm systems and the processes that produce wet snowfall and freezing rain. Current methods used to predict ice accretion from freezing rain will be discussed. Impacts from wet snowfall and freezing rain icing on the electric grid will be examined using over a decade of power outage data across Vermont. The current limitations of predicting and observing both wet snow and freezing rain along with opportunities for improved citizen-science observations will be described.
