Description:
For the week ending 1/20/2019, conditions were MODERATELY DRY. The 7-day cumulative precipitation total of 0.39 inches was 29% below the 10-year (2009-2018) average of 0.55 inches for this date and was in the “near normal” range; the 30-day total of 2.32 inches was 31% below the 10-year average of 3.35 inches and in the “severely dry” range; and the 90-day total of 8.02 inches was 15% below average and in the “severely dry” range. The maximum daily precipitation was 0.22 inches on the 20th. Snow was responsible for 100% of precipitation this week. There was a total of 6.1 inches of new snow this week, with a maximum depth of 5.0 inches (on the 20th). Temperatures ranged from 36 (on the 16th) to 0 (on the 20th) degrees F, with average Hi/Lo temperatures of 31/17 F. Overall, the average high temperature was 5 degrees cooler than last week, while the average low temperature was 8 degrees F cooler than last week. Activity at the bird feeders remained high with the arrival of persistent below-freezing temperatures most of the week. A Red-breasted Nuthatch remains a persistent visitor to the bird feeders, and one or two Carolina Wrens appear to over-wintering on the back deck, though rarely seen. A Coper’s Hawk was noted in the vicinity of the feeders in search of prey on several occasions. A group of 4-5 Wild Turkeys were consistent visitors to the yard throughout the week. Crescent Lake is now 100% covered with ice and snow.
