2014 Annual Meeting

This year’s 2014 WERA-1012 meeting will provide a platform to outline steps and to brainstorm activities that will help participants meet objectives and goals for the next 5 years (May 2013-May 2018). These goals/objectives include the following:

• Promote volunteer precipitation observations as a cost-effective approach to monitoring a highly variable and critically important element of our climate.
• Develop and coordinate protocols for volunteer precipitation measurements that meet state, regional, national, and international needs.
• Improve data quality from volunteer networks through program leadership, training resources, and QA/QC methods.
• Improve climate monitoring capabilities and applications through supplementing existing observing networks.
•  Educate scientists and climate data users on the value and applications of high-density precipitation observations.

In addition to looking at these new goals, we will discuss the future of the National Weather Service COOP network and plans to celebrate its 125th anniversary. The meeting will also include updates on continued improvements to the infrastructure of the program, mapping and interfaces, future mobile application technology, and automation of data quality control in near real-time. A focus on the education and engagement of current and new observers will include improving training materials and making them available through a variety of media. Possible future funding sources to sustain the network in the upcoming years will be evaluated.
